The Golden Needle Literary Association: Empowering Afghan Girls Through Creative Writing
In 1996, when the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan, they unleashed a wave of oppression that sought to silence the voices of women and girls across the country. Schools were shuttered, and women were banished from public life, their dreams and aspirations crushed beneath the weight of draconian laws. Yet, amidst the darkness, a flicker of resistance emerged in the city of Herat—a clandestine gathering known as the Golden Needle Literary Association, where girls dared to defy the Taliban oppressive regime by reclaiming their right to education and expression.

Homeira Qaderi is the founder of the Golden Needle Literary Association. As a graduate of Jawaharlal Nehru University in India, in Persian literature, Dr. Qaderi has published seven books and numerous articles in Farsi, all of which have received critical acclaim.
She served as a Robert G. James Scholar Fellow at Harvard University and is currently at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University. In 2015, she was a writer in residence at the University of Iowa.
Before coming to the US, Dr. Qaderi taught at Gharjistan University in Kabul and worked as a Senior Advisor to the Minister of Education in the last Afghan government. She also served as a Senior Advisor to the Minister of Labor, Social Affairs, Martyrs, and the Disabled in the previous Afghan administration.  —Read more …
